Positively Impacting a Life, One Musical Performance and Lesson at a Time

Why the highly emphasised title to this page, you may have observed or asked.

To return to the fundamentals, I am one of many examples of people whose lives have been positively impacted by music. This impact begins at a personal and communal level, and then spirals outward to the broader society.

The Hometown Glory 2025 report picks out the economic argument for music, looking specifically at grassroots music. In its comprehensive summary, the report asserts that:

  • music has the power to regenerate places,

  • support skilled employment and

  • promote the UK’s global cultural leadership.

It argues that supporting local music can be a key tool in strengthening communities and driving local and national pride. In my own experience, I will add that music has the means to powerfully effect and change an individual's life for the better.

The policy paper, The power of music to change lives: a national plan for music education, published under the 2019 - 2022 Johnson Conservative government set out the government's policy to make music making and learning available to children and young people from early on. Most notably, key highlights from the report attest to the opportunities learning music gave to three young people:

  • Purpose given to young people through music, opening up opportunities to them for further development and study, and improvement in their own personal lives and economic circumstance;

  • Financial support and wellbeing and

  • Community.

The excellent BBC Bitesize article, Five reasons why everyone should have music in their lives, aptly summarises the purpose of my work:

  1. To bring people together through music. As discussed already, the music collective unconscious is proof of the unifying power of music.

  2. To improve people's health and wellbeing through music

  3. To improve confidence and resilience

  4. To add the creative outlet of music to individuals' toolkits and

  5. To enable and help people have fun - because music is fun!

I believe my own small role in this is to be able to positively impact one life at a time through communication, using performance and teaching.

I will endeavour to keep you informed of every step I am taking towards achieving these monumental goals. The blogs section is my vehicle to report to you on the progress of my work. I hope you will be pleased to follow this work and take part in it, too, wherever or however you can.
